How to Settle HDFC Bank Credit Card Dues: A Step-by-Step Guide
Updated: 5 days ago
Credit card dues can grow fast once you start missing payments, because interest and charges keep adding up. If you hold an HDFC Bank credit card and can no longer pay the full outstanding, you may be wondering whether settlement is possible and how to go about it. This guide explains how credit card settlement generally works in India, the RBI rules that protect you, and practical steps to take. Loan Counsel is an independent advisory firm and is not affiliated with HDFC Bank.
Key takeaways
Banks, including HDFC Bank, can agree to settle credit card dues under their own board-approved policies, but no one can guarantee a settlement or a particular discount.
Always explore EMI conversion or a payment plan first if you can afford to repay the full amount over time.
A settlement is reported to credit bureaus and affects your CIBIL score.
RBI rules limit how late payment charges are applied and require card issuers to update the credit bureau within 30 days of settlement.
Get any settlement offer in writing before you pay, and pay only through the bank's official channels.

First, check options other than settlement
Before asking for a settlement, look at whether you can repay in full with some help:
EMI conversion: many card issuers let you convert the outstanding amount into EMIs. Check the interest rate and processing fee.
Paying more than the minimum due: paying only the minimum keeps interest running on the rest. Our post on the minimum due trap explains why.
Using savings or a lower-cost loan: if you can access cheaper credit, it may cost less than carrying card debt.
If none of these work and you cannot repay the full amount, settlement may be worth discussing.
How credit card settlement works
In a settlement, the bank agrees to accept a lower amount than the total outstanding as full and final closure of the account. RBI's June 2023 framework on compromise settlements says lenders must have board-approved policies for such settlements. It also sets a cooling period of at least 12 months, for non-farm loans, before the same lender can give you fresh credit.
The amount a bank accepts depends on many things, including how long the account has been overdue, your income and financial position, and the bank's internal policy. There is no fixed percentage, so be cautious of anyone who guarantees a specific discount. For a general overview, see our guide on how much you can settle a credit card for in India.
RBI credit card rules that protect you
RBI's credit card directions include several points worth knowing:
Past due reporting: a card issuer can report your account as "past due" to credit bureaus only when it has been past due for more than three days.
Late payment charges: late charges can be applied only on the amount outstanding after the due date, not on the total amount due.
Notice before default reporting: before reporting a default to a credit bureau, the issuer must follow its board-approved procedure and inform you.
Update after settlement: after a settlement, the issuer must update your status with the credit bureau within 30 days.
Fair recovery: recovery agents must follow RBI's fair practices, and cannot call you before 8 am or after 7 pm.
Step-by-step: settling HDFC credit card dues
1. Collect your statements
Download your recent card statements and note the principal, interest, late charges and total outstanding. This helps you understand what you actually owe.
2. Work out a realistic amount
Look at your income, essential expenses and any savings. Decide what lump sum or short instalment plan you can really afford.
3. Contact the bank through official channels
Use the contact details on HDFC Bank's official website, or write to the collections or customer care team. Explain your hardship in writing with proof, such as a job loss letter or medical bills.
4. Ask for the offer in writing
Do not pay based on a phone call alone. A proper settlement letter should show your name, card number (masked), the agreed amount, the payment deadline, and that the account will be closed on payment.
5. Pay only to the bank
Pay directly to HDFC Bank through official payment modes. Never pay cash to an agent or transfer money to a personal account.
6. Collect closure proof
After payment, ask for a no-dues or closure letter. Keep it safely, as you may need it to correct your credit report later.
7. Check your credit report
After about 30 days, check your credit report to confirm the account status has been updated.

If you face harassment or get no response
If recovery calls become abusive, or your written requests are ignored, use the bank's grievance redressal route. HDFC Bank lists its complaint and escalation channels, including a Principal Nodal Officer, on its official website. If your complaint is not resolved within 30 days, or you are unhappy with the reply, you can file a complaint under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, at cms.rbi.org.in, within 90 days of the bank's final reply or the end of its 30-day reply period. Frequently asked questions
Will HDFC Bank agree to settle my credit card dues?
It depends on the bank's policy and your situation. Banks can agree to settlements under board-approved policies, but a settlement is never guaranteed.
Does credit card settlement affect my CIBIL score?
Yes. A settled account is reported as "settled", which is a negative mark on your credit report and can make new credit harder to get for some time.
Can I get a new HDFC credit card after settlement?
RBI's framework sets a cooling period of at least 12 months before the same lender can give fresh credit after a compromise settlement on non-farm loans. After that, approval still depends on the bank's own assessment.
Should I pay the recovery agent directly?
No. Always pay the bank directly through official channels and get a receipt. Never pay cash or transfer to a personal account.
